Corn harvesting 2016

So, corn was planted on our land again after a "never again" statement made by the senior partner.
And guess what! I think that statement will be made again after this year.  We will see how long it will stick this time.  But when the world gives you lemons......................you make the best of it.  So after being frozen and the land being quite wet and waiting in line for our turn to get the corn done the men decided that they would try a different approach. What's the hurry?  The weather of course. Friday's forecast is not good.  Lots and lots of snow. So they are swathing, then putting it through the corn processor on the harvester.  The going is really slow but it is going. Even with snow falling right at this minute. (Oct. 13/16 7:45 pm). There was a bit of a delay with a visit to the hospital ER when the junior partner cut his hand on the swather that required 5 stitches, but that does not stop him from working.

Happy Dad. He does love harvesting :)
A minor hiccup yesterday. Dad is watching Jeff repair.
This was yesterday afternoon when only a bit of field was done
                                                           Swathed and standing

Pictures of this morning now (Oct. 14)
Dad is further away so progress was made

All the round bales are still in the field. When will they be brought home?  Who knows!

                                                        Another update.... Saturday Oct. 15/16

The road was getting so gross and slippery (Jeff even put his seat belt on) that
it was decided to start a pile in the field. Uncle John is the packer

127 loads later with 3 swathed rows down and 3-4 acres to go Dad called it quits. Harvester lost too many teeth so the going was too tough.  And the area around the pile is SOUPY!  They are hoping to finish tomorrow.  Good thing we have our day of rest because those days were late. Wed-11:30p.m. Thurs- 1:00 a.m. Fri- 1:30 a.m. Sat.9:30p.m. And of  course because of the way we do things here they all had to eat after that yet.
The Slomps were doing their corn along Hwy 769 but they were shut down by the county because the road was dangerously slippery in that section because of all the mud tracked onto it.  Jolene's Oma Wierenga (age 92) went off the road because of the goop. She is fine and her car looked alright too.
